How to zip and unzip files in iOS 11 Files app

With iOS 11, Apple has removed the company’s iCloud Drive in favor of a modern and handy Files app. Apple’s new Files app offers a lot more functionality than its predecessor and provides a huge improvement in file organization. However, there’s still something missing here.

In iOS 11, you cannot zip and unzip files stored in Files app, which is a little bit disappointing. Fortunately, there is a simple workaround for creating a zip from documents stored in iOS 11 Files app and all it takes is using a third-party app called Zipped.

For some background, Zipped is one of the best Zip file management apps out there. As the name implies, Zipped allows you to compress files into ZIP file and unzip any files stored on your device.

In this guide, we will go through the steps to zip and unzip files in the Files app. Before we begin, make sure you are now running iOS 11 on your device. If not, head to Settings > General > Software Update and update your device.

How to zip and unzip files in iOS 11 Files app

If you now own an iPad running iOS 11, everything is much easier. You can enable Split View mode on your iPad for a quicker file transfer.

Step one: Launch the Files app on your device, then tap and hold a file and add more files using your other finger

Step two: Once you are done, drag all your files you wish to create a zip for and drop them in the Zipped app. Release you finger and select Save File from the menu

Step three: Select the folder that contains you files (this folder will be added to the Files app on your device). After that, hit the Add button at the top right corner of the screen and then go back to the Files app

Step four: Once you are in, locate the folder you chose earlier and you will find your zipped file there.

Step five: If you want to unzip a file in the Files app on iPad, just simply drag it to the Zipped app and select the folder for your unzipped file.

How to zip and unzip files on your iPhone running iOS 11

If you now own an iPhone, the method is slightly different. If you need help, you can follow the steps below.

Step one: Launch the Zipped app on your device and then tap the box to select files

Step two: On the next screen, head to the folder that contains the files you wish to create a zip for and then hit the Select button at the top

Step three: Select all the files you wish to create a zip for and hit Done at the top right corner. Once you are done, hit Save File from the popup, select the folder for your zipped file and tap on Add.
